Working with a Founder: Raffaella

Black and white portrait of a woman from behind with short hair — BOLD Factory

When the perfumer’s role isn’t to create a fragrance, but to set a direction

In perfumery, the perfumer is often portrayed as an author.
A solitary creator. An artistic sensibility able to translate emotions into formulas.

It’s a fascinating story. But it’s incomplete.

In the project we developed with Raffaella, what struck us from the start wasn’t the olfactory quality, which was already outstanding, but the clarity of vision with which she approached her role.

She didn’t ask us to “produce a perfume”.
She asked us to build a system that would make that perfume understandable, defensible and sustainable over time.

This distinction changes everything.

The starting point: not the fragrance, but the context

The fragrance already existed. It was strong, recognizable, technically flawless.

But a fragrance on its own isn’t a project.

So the first job was to change the question:
not “how good is it?”, but “what context does it need to live in?”.

We worked on:

  • real (not aspirational) positioning

  • sustainable price range

  • a concrete target audience

  • channels compatible with that kind of language

Only once these elements were clear did the fragrance start to “work” outside the lab as well.

The role of design as translation, not decoration

One of the most delicate stages of the project was the design.

Not because there was a lack of ideas, but because the risk of over-interpreting the fragrance was very high.

When a fragrance is strong, design can:

  • amplify it

  • or betray it

We chose a clear path: the design had to translate, not explain.

Every choice, materials, proportions, weight, finishes, was assessed against one key question:
does this decision strengthen or weaken the project’s credibility?

We didn’t pursue originality for its own sake. We pursued legible consistency.

Production as an act of responsibility

In many projects, production is a technical phase. Here it was an ethical phase.

Every production choice had a direct impact on:

  • margins

  • repeatability

  • the project’s sustainability

We worked to avoid two common mistakes:

  • production that is “too ambitious”

  • “defensive” production

The result was a solid production system that doesn’t put the brand under pressure with every reorder.

What Raffaella’s project teaches us

This project makes one thing clear:
the maturity of a brand does not depend on the budget, but on the quality of the decisions made upstream.

Raffaella didn’t look for shortcuts. She embraced the complexity. And she managed it.

This is how a fragrance stops being a creative exercise and becomes a credible project.
