Working with a Founder: Francesco

Founder of a perfume brand — BOLD Factory

Every founder invests time, resources and expectations in building their brand. But it is during production that many of those choices are put to the test.

Francesco had entrusted BOLD with the production of his perfume lines in 10 ml and 50 ml formats.

A project in which our job was to turn components and fragrances into finished products, ready to go to market.

Francesco had already selected and bought the components for his packaging, choosing to manage part of his supply chain himself.

During production, however, some anomalies emerged that called for a closer look.

What initially looked like an isolated issue turned into a major quality inspection.

When production brings a problem to light

Industrial production is a pivotal moment in bringing a product to life.

This is where components from different suppliers have to work together, meeting technical, quality and aesthetic requirements.

While producing Francesco’s lines, our team found a number of issues traceable to the packaging components.

The anomalies triggered a more in-depth quality control procedure.

The checks revealed numerous non-conformities, making it necessary to step in so that the defects would not compromise the products intended for sale.

The point was not simply to spot a problem, but to stop it from becoming a problem for the end customer.

Quality is measured above all when something goes wrong

When people talk about industrial quality, they often think of checking the finished product.

But an effective quality system must also be able to step in during production, recognising anomalies and triggering the necessary checks.

In Francesco’s project, the issues that came up in production made it possible to take a closer look at the reliability of the components he had bought.

The work did not stop at identifying the defects.

We had to assess how widespread they were, separate conforming components from non-conforming ones and manage the impact on production.

This intervention kept substandard products from reaching the market.

Because the end consumer does not distinguish between the bottle maker, the cap supplier and the company that did the filling.

For the consumer, only one party is responsible for perceived quality: the brand.

From a production issue to a more reliable supply chain

The checks had a second important effect.

They gave Francesco concrete evidence to reassess the reliability of some of his suppliers.

A component may look fine at the sampling stage, yet show problems once it is used at production scale.

That is why supplier selection cannot rest solely on price or on the visual approval of a sample.

You also need to consider consistency of quality, conformity of deliveries and the ability to guarantee continuity of supply.

Thanks to what the checks revealed, Francesco was able to start looking at more reliable alternatives for future production runs.

A production problem thus became an opportunity to strengthen the brand’s industrial set-up.

The role of an industrial partner

The relationship between a founder and a production partner shows its real value when the unexpected happens.

BOLD had neither selected nor purchased the components under inspection.

That, however, did not make stepping in any less important.

Our job was not only to complete the filling and packing, but to help ensure that the final product met the expected quality standards.

That also means taking responsibility for flagging issues, investigating them and identifying what needs to be done before going ahead.

An industrial partner should not just run a production. It should help protect the value of the product it is making.
